I’m just going to say it: the first couple of kid’s birthday parties might actually be more about the parents than the kids. Stay with me. You can’t believe you’ve stayed sane with all the changes to your life, so you throw a party to celebrate, invite some bewildered friends and family to bear witness, take some photos to prove it was real and breathe a sigh of guilty relief when it’s over.

And then before you know it your little ones grow up and they’re unfeasibly excited about their birthday. And so are you. That’s how my husband, Brad, and I felt planning our daughter’s fourth birthday. The anticipation and mind-blowing-ness of it all was palpable.
